Idealized America, nostalgia for leisure, a supposed simplicity of a past era, these are themes that surface in my work. The cocktail parties and recreational activities I portray are an ironic reflection of a state of mind and being that no longer exists in the same form with the same innocence. These scenes express something missing from, or desired by, the contemporary soul: unselfconscious rest, gathering and play.

In “Afternoon Nap,” the image of a woman asleep in a chair implies the contemporary wish for a less stressful existence. “Cocktail Party” speaks of a woman’s vibrancy and confidence as she engages the camera, unapologetically armed with her drink and cigarette. Compositions with water and swimmers become symbols of relaxation and freedom; the suburban American moment in  “Leapfrog” becomes a universal moment of setting aside decorum for spontaneous joy.

I paint in acrylic on wood and infuse characters and situations with energy by bringing active brushwork, gesture, color and expression to both background and foreground. I tell stories in a cinematic fashion. The ongoing narrative created by evolving subject matter and evolving painterly impulses create unpredictable frontier. As I get older, I work toward bolder and more direct work. Please stay tuned.
